Shaping the clay,

Playing with textures and colours,

Creating objects, whether useful or useless, but in the image of their maker...

Clients of the House of the Birds who would like to discover the art of ceramics and learn its different techniques, so as to be able to create objects following their own inspiration, have available to them a number of workshops, conceived in collaboration with the Torre do Sino atelier.

Deeply inspired by the surrounding nature, Cláudia enhances her creations by using glaze and pigments of vibrant colour, creating a unique object every time.

Not only were the ceramic objects and decorations of the House of the Birds developed in collaboration with the Torre do Sino atelier, but Marisa herself has also been able to profit from the expert and technical advice of her friend Cláudia on this demanding art.

Clients of the House of the Birds are made welcome in Cláudia’s atelier, where she proposes workshops on pottery and on introduction to azulejo tile painting.

CERAMICS & AZULEJO TILES

The importance attached to this art by the Portuguese is attested by the innumerable examples of it to be found all around Portugal, as well as throughout the world

Pinching
Relatively simple technique that helps to understand clay and its behaviour. Ideal for bowls and cups.

Coils
This is a primitive technique, brought from the New World after its discovery by Christopher Columbus (hence the name of “colombín” in Castilian or “colombin” in French). It allows the making of all shapes and sizes of pots without using the wheel. The pot is made from coils of clay of variable thickness.

Slabs

With the help of a rolling pin, the clay is flattened as if it were dough, so that a regular thickness is obtained. After this, the clay is cut into slabs, which constitute the starting point for the making of the pot. The slab technique allows a large variety of forms.

Preparation and kneading of the clay, as well as the basic tools for shaping the pots, will be dealt with in this workshop.

This workshop will deal with the main techniques of hand-shaping.

HANDS ON CLAY – 2x 3H

  • The workshop will have a total duration of 6 hours – 3 hours a day, morning or afternoon (as agreed).

  • Materials and firing included in the price.

This workshop will deal with decoration techniques before and after bisque firing.

DECORATING – 2x 3H

Before firing

While the clay is still fresh, the pot can be decorated through the application to the bare clay surface of motives in relief or, conversely, through carving or impressing it with the help of different tools.

After firing
Glazing and painting: pot drying techniques before bisque firing, placing of ceramics in the kiln, and firing materials, will be dealt with.

  • The workshop will have a total duration of 6 hours – 3 hours a day, morning or afternoon (as agreed).

  • Materials and firing included in the price.

The participant will learn how to prepare supports and pigments, to dominate the stroke, colours, highlights and shadows, to transfer motifs onto supports, while getting acquainted with the different painting techniques.

The tiles will be painted in cobalt blue and polychrome.
